Local Dog Breeders

We bought Holly from one of the local dog breeders.

We visited the breeder 6 weeks after the puppies had been born. We saw her mother and her brothers and sisters.

There are toy, miniature, standard and teacup poodle breeders. Some breed one size, others breed two or more sizes.

If you're looking at small breeds of dogs, a toy poodle may be your new housemate.

Occasionally, local dog breeders may have an older poodle for sale as well as puppies. If you're looking for an adult dog, check with local breeders first.

Advantages

Getting your puppy from a breeder has several advantages.

They perform health checks on both parents, make sure the parents have been vaccinated, eat a healthy and nutritious diet and keep them in an environment that is clean and safe.

Puppies born at a breeders stay with their mother and littermates until they are 8 weeks old and ready for adoption.

This ensures the puppies have a healthy beginning; they learn from their mother and littermates. They have 8 weeks of being around other dogs and being around the breeder.

Breeders may also groom poodles and train puppies. If so, the pups have a headstart on good grooming and good manners before you bring them into your home.

Check with local breeders to see what they do to prepare your pup to come home with you.

How to Find

You can log onto the Poodle Club of America to find breeders and rescue contacts in your area. The American Kennel Club can also help you find breeders.

Dog shows are also good points of contact. Talk to the owners for recommendations on where to purchase your puppy.

Questions and Contracts

The breeder wants you and your pup to have a long life together, but sometimes unforeseen circumstances occur once the pup goes home with you.

To prevent the puppy from ending up in a shelter, ask the breeder if the puppy can be returned to him if something happens. A good breeder will take the pup back.

Your breeder will give you a contract. At the simplest, it will list the receipt of the sale, the breeder, your name, the name of your dog, sex of the dog, and whether you will spay or neuter the pup.

It may also contain a health guarantee which gives you up to 48 hours to have a vet check your pup out. If something is wrong, the breeder will take him back and issue a refund or give you another puppy.

And, it could also contain a clause that says the puppy must be returned to the breeder if you cannot keep him, and limited registration which says you can't register puppies born to your poodle with the American Kennel Club.

Reputable local dog breeders want the best for their puppies. They want to make sure the poodles have a loving home and that the pup isn't a novelty that will soon wear off.
